HADLEIGH is a small town with a population of around 9,000 located approximately 5 miles west of the seaside resort of Southend on Sea and 35 miles east of London. It is best known for the Norman, Grade 1 listed, St. James The Less Church in the centre of the town and the 13th century Hadleigh Castle, painted by Constable, which overlooks the River Thames.

Several books have been written about Hadleigh:
~ "Hadleigh - An Essex Village" by Marion Hancock & Sandra Harvey (ISBN 0 85033 624 4). Published 1986 by Phillimore & Co. Ltd. but out of print.

~ "Hadleigh Past" by Ian Yearsley (ISBN 1 86077 078 9). Published 1998 by Phillimore & Co. Ltd. and in print.

~ "Hadleigh Salvation Army Farm - A Vision Reborn" by Gordon Parkhill & Graham Cook (ISBN 978-085412-776-4). Published 2008. This book tells the story of William Booth's arrival in Hadleigh in 1891 to start his Farm Colony and developments to the present day. Available from Hadleigh Training Centre Tea Rooms on Castle Lane.
